The Weeknd | Starboy

Mr. Abel Tesfaye has released his highly anticipated 3rd official LP Starboy and it is, well, it’s pretty good! Although, like most hip-hop/pop albums it is jam packed with a few too many tracks (Attention, All I Know, Die For you) and probably would not have suffered from being 20 minutes shorter, Starboy also contains some of The Weeknd’s most slickly produced and important pop songs to date. The first half of the LP which contains wonderful features from Lana Del Rey and Kendrick Lamar is undoubtedly the stronger side but the second side of the album features what is possibly the best track in “I Feel It Coming” which features classic Daft Punk production and vocal effects.

I’ve seen it said that Starboy is an album that does not further The Weeknd’s development as an artist or that this album shows he has become a product of the pop machine that he originally seemed so separated from, but if you take this LP at face value what we find is an artist who is at the top of his drug-addled best. In my humble opinion, other than a select few unnecessary tracks Starboy is the best pop album I’ve heard all year that isn’t called Lemonade.
