Shana Burgess, with traditional Inuit snowshoes

Shana Burgess was born and raised in Labrador, in the northeast region of Canada. She feels a great connection to that part of the world and to the outdoors.

Shana is Inuit and Scottish on her mother’s side, Irish on her father’s, and is registered NunatuKavut (meaning “Our Ancient Land”), an aboriginal population of mixed Inuit and European background.

Shana moved to Montréal in 2007, away from family and friends, and picked up photography to share her life and experiences with those not with her. The positive response to her photos inspired her to take more, and with the support of a few very special people, her craft developed into a true passion. Shana is driven to expose the beauty that surrounds us all, every day, all of the time. She is self-taught: “My eye knows what it wants. I see life in still-frames. It’s all gut instinct.”

Shana currently lives near Guelph, Ontario, Canada. Her credo: “Each moment of the year has its own beauty, a picture which was never before and shall never be seen again.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
